The Westfield State University campus occupies a beautiful wooded bluff with sweeping views of the distant Berkshire Hills. The University Hall site sits on a narrow strip of land bordered by the University quad and the wooded landscape beyond. The building takes the conceptual form of two trees that have fallen in the forest. This ‘tree’ metaphor guided the design and reflects the natural character of the setting. The ground floor houses space for university-wide functions, while each residential floor features smaller social lounges and quiet “perch” lounges that float over the quad below. University Hall complements the surrounding landscape and its signature “grand arch” bridges the academic quad and mountain scenery beyond.
